Queen Elizabeth II held a position of the highest power, and yet she answered to a higher power still. In her Christmas address of 2000, she said, “For me, the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God, provide a framework in which I try to lead my life.” And, of course, she was the longest-reigning monarch. She was the most-travelled monarch in history, having visited 116 countries. In 1976, she was one of the first heads of state to send an email. One would be hard-pressed to say that the Queen’s reign was characterised by small actions rather, Elizabeth was a Queen of superlatives - first, most, and longest best describe her activities. In her 2020 Christmas message, Queen Elizabeth said, “The teachings of Christ have served as my inner light, as has the sense of purpose we can find in coming together to worship.” She respected tradition, but, more importantly, she sought to follow Christ’s example - respecting and valuing all people equally. In 2011, the Queen approved changes to the laws of succession, allowing first-born daughters to take precedence over younger-born brothers. Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith or none.” “For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life, a role-model of reconciliation and forgiveness: he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance, and healing. Prior to her ascension to the throne, the Queen made a radio broadcast on her 21st birthday in 1947, saying, Throughout her lifetime, she didn’t shy away from publicly sharing her faith and humbly acknowledging her dependence on Jesus Christ. Although Queen Elizabeth shared this title in common with her predecessors, she held it with a marked difference – she breathed life into it. Pound coins bearing the image of the Queen’s head read, 'Elizabeth II D.G.REG.F.D', an abbreviation for a Latin phrase meaning, 'Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.' This dates back to the sixteenth century during the reign of King Henry VIII, who was the first king to hold the title. Her Majesty held many titles during her 70-year reign, not least of which was, 'Defender of the Faith'. We give thanks for Her Majesty’s life of resilient selfless service our thoughts and prayers are with all members of the Royal Family.
